Chicago, IL- After years of strong suspicion, a recent study shows that most dentists actually did choose their profession because they love to inflict pain. In a survey of 2000 practicing dentists, 87% said “inflicting pain” was the number one or two reason they chose to become an oral health professional. “It’s actually liberating to know that other dentists chose this career for the same reason I did,” said Roger Halford, a dentist who has been in practice for seventeen years. “When patients would ask me if I became a dentist so I could hurt people, I felt like a fraud because I would tell them it was because I enjoy helping people and working with my hands. It feels like a weight has been taken off my shoulders.” Dr. Halford went on to say that nothing brings him greater joy than seeing a patient writhe in pain while he provides dental care. “I don’t know what it is, but the adrenaline rush I get from it is all the thanks I need.”
